Livestock production is an industry that encompasses the whole San Luis Valley. In 2013 there were an estimated 82,000 beef cows and calves and over 300 dairy cows in the San Luis Valley. The Valley also has a viable sheep industry of over 8,000 ewes. Colorado State University Extension assists livestock producers with nutrition, breeding, marketing, ranch management planning, feed analysis, emergency planning and other livestock management techniques to help ranchers be efficient and profitable.
