About the Program

In the San Luis Valley 4-H Robotics program participants learn about robotics and programming by completing hands-on challenges using Lego Mindstorms EV3 robotics kits. Teams of 2 to 4 youth meet monthly throughout the year to build, program, and prepare for state and national robotics competitions, including RoboRAVE Colorado, RoboRAVE USA, and the state 4-H Robotics Challenge. Group field trips and local and regional competitions help provide additional enrichment for team members. Our robotics season typically kicks off with Open House events in October, then starts in earnest in November with practices and monthly challenge events (held on Saturday mornings). The season wraps with fair challenges and a year-end celebration in September.

The initial pilot program was funded by a grant from the Colorado 4-H Foundation. Saguache County awarded a $5000 Sales Tax Grant to the project in 2014 to expand in their area. The San Luis Valley 4-H Foundation also provided financial support to support new teams.

Expansion & New Member Recruitment

We are looking at continuing to expand this program in the future and are seeking both youth members and adult coaches. Youth must be between the ages of 8 and 18 and live in the SLV. Adult volunteers will be provided with training, curriculum and equipment so they can coach a local team (estimated time commitment is from 5 to 7 hours a month). Space for youth participants is limited due to robotics equipment costs. Children of adult volunteers will be given priority on the waiting list.
