RoboRAVE Colorado

We are taking 2019 off from hosting a full RoboRAVE Colorado event. Instead we'll be hosting a RoboRALLY where teams can compete in a low-stakes and more relaxed setting. The event will help prepare teams to attend the RoboRAVE North America event, held May 3-4, 2019 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Our RoboRALLY will take place on Saturday, April 6, 2019, from 9 am to 4 pm, at Monte Vista High School in Monte Vista, Colorado (295 E. Prospect Ave, Monte Vista, CO 81144). This low-cost, high impact robotics event allows all youth robotics teams from Colorado and surrounding communities the opportunity to compete in challenges of varying difficulty levels. Youth can use any robotics platform valued under $1500.

At this event, all youth will compete in the same age division. Youth ages 8 to 18 are invited to participate. The 2019 event will feature the following challenges:

a-MAZE-ing Challenge (Elementary & Middle School)

Precisely navigate an elevated wooden maze, made up of 45, 90 and 135 degree turns in under 2 minutes. Gain extra points by finishing under the time limit.

  • Download rules
  • Note: Age divisions will be combined to compete against each other for this event. Elementary teams should prepare to run on a middle school-length track.

AlpineBot Challenge (All Ages)

Robots try to climb a ramp up and onto a platform to plant a flag. Note: Since this event is meant to build skills, we'll have 45 degree and 60 degree ramps, instead of the 80 degree ramp mentioned in the official rules.

  • Download rules
  • Note: Age divisions will be combined to compete against each other for this event. Elementary teams will compete agains middle school teams.

Line Following Race Challenge (All Ages)

Get practice following a 1/2 inch line through complicated junctions. Try to get to the finish faster than the opposing team. The line follow practice you get here will prepare your team for the Line Following event at RoboRAVE.

  • Download rules
  • Note: Age divisions will be combined to compete against each other for this event. Elementary teams will compete agains middle school teams.

SumoBot (All Ages)

Design, build, and program an autonomous robot that can push one or more opponent sumo robot(s) off an elevated wrestling ring. At our event, we’ll only be offering the mini class.

  • Download rules
  • Note: Age divisions will be combined to compete against each other for this event. All robots must be in the "Mini" class: i.e. all robots must weigh under 1 kg.

We generally follow all RoboRAVE International official rules. Exceptions generally involve offering more limited age divisions, combinging age divisions, and having smaller tournaments (for example, they may be 4 team tournaments instead of 8 team tournaments). All of these exceptions are just a response to the smaller size of our event.

Get more information about each challenge, including videos, on the RoboRAVE website.

Be sure to visit the links above to download the rules for each of these challenges. Please pay special attention to sizing restrictions. Robots will be required to meet the check-in requirements before they are allowed to run for points on the competition day. If you have any questions about the rules, contact the event organizers for clarifications.

Teams can be anywhere from 2 to 4 students. Teams may enter more than one event, but are encouraged to enter no more than 2 events.

Registration & Schedule

Teams that would like to participate should pre-register using this Google Form so organizers can prepare for final numbers. The form asks you to register your whole team. Registration is open until March 27. Cost is $10 per child to participate in the Rally. Teams should pay at the door when they attend the event.

Doors will open to participants at 8:45 am for check in. Teams will have the whole morning to practice on the challenges. A short welcome and rule review will take place around 10:00 am. Scoring will be open from 11 am to 2:15 pm. Tournaments will take place around 2:30 pm. We'll likely have a few fun drop in contests, like a drag race.
